Canada’s Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Sheep

It was announced today that the Canadian Sheep Federation is beginning the process to redevelop the Canadian Code of Practice for the Care and Handling for Sheep.

As part of the development process there is a survey for producers, industry and stakeholders to have their say about any top-of-mind welfare concerns they want to share.

This is your chance to have your say in the next Code of Practice.

The survey is open until July 25, 2024 and is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6TCH7QV

ASBA Awards 1st Youth Purebred Sheep Purchase Incentive

2022 - This year marked the first time the Alberta Sheep Breeders Association created a unique opportunity for young Alberta sheep breeders to purchase a registered purebred sheep. ASBA asked Alberta junior producers to submit a "Top 10" list in which they expressed why they would benefit from obtaining a purebred sheep. This contest allowed for them to be considered for a chance at a $500 Purchase Incentive. The board of directors were more than thrilled with the submissions from young sheep breeders from across Alberta.  Candidates ranged from 3 years to 18 years old and provided a wide variety of reasons why they would love to be considered for this opportunity.

The board of directors received 24 applications expressing their interest and Involvement within the sheep industry.  ASBA is proud to support the development of youth as we continue to encourage overall and consistent improvement in the breeding and management of purebred sheep in Alberta.

Congratulations to Kate Grimmeyer who was the successful recipient of this year's Youth Purebred Sheep Incentive. Kate now has the opportunity to purchase a purebred animal and ASBA will contribute $500 towards this purchase.

Honorable mention goes to Hunter Farr and Ayden Baker who also provided outstanding applications and the ASBA board would like to award them with a complimentary CSBA membership for the year.

We also want to congratulate all of the applicants for taking the time and showing interest in purebred registered animals. The board wishes them all success in the industry as they all did a fantastic job in providing insight to our future sheep producers!

Kate with PARKER 34E 161J, her new registered purebred ewe.
